The fairy is awake!

Waking Fairy, Copper and Cholla Cactus Wood Sculpture

I just completed my latest sculpture. Handcrafted Copper and Cholla Cactus Wood Sculpture on Oak Base; approx. 7" high x 9-1/4" wide. Hand cut and forged free-standing art.

On warm summer nights fairies like to sleep in cool, fragrant flower beds where they can gaze at the stars and moon. This fairy found a nice cholla log to curl up in, and now she is waking up to start her day. http://www.lunarskies.com/pages1/wakingfairy1.html

Fairy, Still a Work In Progress

Did you ever notice how everything you create takes more time than you thought it would. Happens to me all the time. So my fairy is still not finished; consider this a progress report.
She's not in pain, trust me. I haven't even applied any heat yet.
If you think a lot have holes have been drill, you're right. I glue the pattern onto the copper with a glue stick, simple!
After I've cut out the metal, I have to remove the pattern. I used to struggle with this step. I tried just peeling the paper off; nope, it separates. I tried soaking in mineral spirits; nope, better but mostly just messy and it leaves a nasty residue. The solution? If all else fails, read the instructions. The glue used for glue sticks is water soluble. After about two minutes soaking in plain water the paper just floats away from the metal. Boy is my face red. Great, red face and green hands, and it's not anywhere close to Christmas.
That's better! I'm working on the hair now. After that I can start putting her together.

Incredible Wedding Tresury on Etsy

I get selected for Etsy Treasuries fairly often, and sometimes I blog about it when it's a piece I proud of having created. But in this case I feel so honored to be included in what I consider to be one of the best Treasuries I've seen. Check it out and see if you agree: http://www.etsy.com/treasury/4dea3aaf69ad8eef69e94dcd/summer-wedding-choiceslovely-grey-pink

Rescued From The Deep, Sort Of

The latest in my seemingly endless quest to update my gemstone web site: this material is very different from most of the stones I cut. It's actually a fossil.

The fossil remains of turritella are the shells or the cast of shells from soft-bodied mollusks. Turritella are a type of sea snail with tall spiral shells. They vary in size from about 1/2 inch to 6 inches long. Turritella are found in seas all around the world. They live in the sediment on the sea floor where they filter fine particles of food from the water.

These stones make very interesting jewelry: http://www.lunarskies.com/pages2/turritella.html
Or just nice specimens: http://www.gemalchemy.com/pages1/turritella.html

Another Fairy, A Work In Progress

This time it's going to be a sculpture. I started with an idea and these items: a piece or cholla cactus wood and a chunk of copper. There will be more pieces but you've got to start somewhere.
Then I started grinding and carving the chunk of copper.
More grinding and more elements.
It's starting to look like something now, but I've still got a lot to do. You may have heard the rumor that copper will turn some people's skin green . . . It's true!
That's all for now. Thanks for stopping by!
