The fairy is awake!

Waking Fairy, Copper and Cholla Cactus Wood Sculpture

I just completed my latest sculpture. Handcrafted Copper and Cholla Cactus Wood Sculpture on Oak Base; approx. 7" high x 9-1/4" wide. Hand cut and forged free-standing art.

On warm summer nights fairies like to sleep in cool, fragrant flower beds where they can gaze at the stars and moon. This fairy found a nice cholla log to curl up in, and now she is waking up to start her day. http://www.lunarskies.com/pages1/wakingfairy1.html

Another Fairy, A Work In Progress

This time it's going to be a sculpture. I started with an idea and these items: a piece or cholla cactus wood and a chunk of copper. There will be more pieces but you've got to start somewhere.
Then I started grinding and carving the chunk of copper.
More grinding and more elements.
It's starting to look like something now, but I've still got a lot to do. You may have heard the rumor that copper will turn some people's skin green . . . It's true!
That's all for now. Thanks for stopping by!

Dragonfly Sculpture Feaured on Artfire

"As the weather warms, the insects begin to take flight. This collection celebrates the insects that are attracted to the garden."
That's the theme of this very cool collection. Drop on by and leave a comment:

Hummingbird and Trumpet Bush Sculpture

My newest piece is one I've been working towards since I started making these sculptures. I needed to practice some techniques and sharpen a few skills before I felt ready to take this on. I've got to say I'm very pleased with the result.

Hummingbird and Trumpet Bush Copper and Cholla Cactus wood Sculpture on an Oak base. Approximately 14-1/4" high x 12-1/2" x 6-12".

The challenge in creating this piece was to make the hummingbird appear to be in flight, hovering as it feeds upon a flower. I wasn't sure if the metal piece used to crate the beak would be strong enough to support the bird's body. I was pleased to discover that it was ridged enough.

I love the way hummingbirds appears to be suspended in mid air while they feed.

This piece has additional views pictured in my Etsy and ArtFire shops

The Intruder, butterfly sculpture

The Intruder, butterfly sculpture

My most recent butterfly sculpture includes a visitor who may not be completely welcome. At least not as welcome as the other butterflies. To Bee or not to Bee, that is the question.

I'll be offering this latest sculpture on my web site and in my etsy and artfire stores soon. I just couldn't wait to put it on my blog and send it to my friends at Creating the Hive.

This piece includes six butterflies and one bee with a rose in copper on a cholla cactus branch, mounted on an oak base.
