Shouldn't the back be as pretty as the front?

I know that's the case with dresses, so why not jewelry. The back is the part that touches you. These two pendants are part of a group of Chrysocolla jewelry I just listed in my Etsy shop. I'm started adding some words to the backs of my pendants to make the backs a little more interesting. Some of the non-technical characteristics of chrysocolla are: conciliation, reassurance, wisdom, peace and tranquility, intuition, patience and unconditional love. The gemstone Chrysocolla is often confused with turquoise. It is a copper bearing mineral found wherever copper deposits occur especially in areas of the southwestern USA, Chili, Zaire, Australia, France and England. Eliat Stone is a variegated blue and green mixture of chrysocolla and other copper minerals found in the Gulf of Aqaba, near the northwestern end of the Red Sea". Pure chrysocolla is too soft for jewelry purposes but it is often found in quartz deposits which makes it hard enough to polish for cabochons. It is often found mixed with malachite, turquoise and azurite. The druzy form of chrysocolla is a beautiful Robin's egg blue.

FInding Jewery by Color Made Easier

I've re-worked my web site. Actually I'm always re-working it, but I've recently made some major changes. One of the changes is a new row of link buttons I've added near the top of each page. Each of these buttons allow you to navigate to jewelry pages by color. I think color is one of the most important aspects of someone's decision making process when they by art, clothing, furniture, jewelry, etc. On any of the Jewelry by Color pages you'll see an assortment of pictures of jewelry pieces representing the color in question. If you click any of the the pictures you navigate to the page on my web site of the corresponding stone. It works just like the stone type links on the left of every page except you get a visual image of the color of the stone first.

It's not like jewelry grows on trees, Not Exactly

It doesn't grow on trees, as far as I know, but I've grown another pendant with it's own tree. These tree agate pendants have just been listed in my Etsy and Artfire shops. The big ol' pendant on the left is pictured in both front and back views to show the silver tree that I forged into the surround.

Blue Lace Agate, but is it really Blue?

My newest jewelry creations feature the gemstone called blue lace agate. To me it looks grey with a blue cast. I didn't come up with the name, but I like it. I made the pendants with open backs to allow light to filter through the crystal striations. Blue Lace Agate comes from Africa, it was originally discovered in Nambia. A member of the chalcedony group, a type of quartz. Named for the white striations or banding running through blue stone giving it a delicate lacey look.

Hosting my first Giveaway. I need advice.

Here's my plan so far. Right now I have 41 items in my Etsy Shop listed at $69.00. I want to offer one of them as a giveaway. I plan to create a photo album on my Facebook Fan Page so viewers can easily review which or my items sell for that price. Participants will choose an item, then contact me with their choice. They can have a second choice, or have two chances at the same item by referring a friend, as long as that friend participates as well. I will use a random generator to select from the chosen items, so there will be a winner for certain. If the winning item has been chosen by more than one entrant, I'll use another random generator to select the ultimate winner.

I will also offer to let non winners buy the piece of their choice at a 20% discount at the close of the contest. This would have to be on a first come first served basis.

So here are my questions:
1. Should I suspend the sale of my $69.00 items until the end of the Giveaway? (I'd hate to loose a sale by doing this, but I have to be sure the giveaway winner gets the piece they've selected).

2. How long should the giveaway run?

3. What are the most effective ways to let people know about the giveaway.

4. Are there some obvious flaws in my plan.

Labradorite, I love the glow!

Labradorite can produce a colorful play of light across cleavage planes and in sliced sections called labradorescence. The usually intense colors range from the typical blues and violets through greens, yellows and oranges. Some rare specimens display all these colors simultaneously. (scientific explanation below picture for those not bored to tears by this first paragraph).

With jewelry, it's all about color and flash. This stone has it all. Below are some pieces I made recently. I've included some Blue Topaz accent stones in some of the pieces. I love this combination.

The color display is from lamellar intergrowths inside the crystal. These intergrowths result from compatible chemistries at high temperatures becoming incompatible at lower temperatures and thus a separating and layering of these two phases. The resulting color effect is caused by a ray of light entering a layer and being refracted back and forth by deeper layers. This refracted ray is slowed by the extra travel through the layers and mixes with other rays to produce a light ray coming out that has a different wavelength than when it went in.

The Last Time I Posted I was a Year Younger!

OK, not actually a year, but I did have a birthday since then so numerically I was . . . never mind, I was just trying to get your attention. It really has been a while since I last posted, so now I'm going to drive you nuts with a series of posts. I've been busy, of course; what artist or crafter is not busy this time of year? I've been making jewelry and sculptures.

These pieces are Larimar, an opaque stone in pleasing patterns of blue and greenish blue similar to the color of the ocean in tropical climates. Larimar was named by a Dominican for LARIssa his daughter and MAR the Spanish word for sea. Larimar came on the market in the1970's and has to date only been found in the Dominican Republic.

The pendant at far left has a garnet accent stone, the pendant just off center has a Lemon Citrine accent stone. The stone in the ring on the far right is huge. These pieces are available in my Etsy and Artfie shops.

I've been away, I'm making a rocky return!

I've just returned from a ten day trip to California. I worked on a few new jewelry pieces while I was there, but mostly it was a pleasure trip. I've missed my friends at Creating the Hive http://www.creatingthehive.com and Facebook. I hope you guys can catch me up on all the happs. I stopped by Quartzite on the way home and paid a visit to my favorite rock shop (Watch for Rocks below).

This is Azurite in Chrysocolla; each stone is about 2" by 2-1/2".
All I could say when I saw this stuff was "WOW"!

I found some great Turritella fossil slabs

I got this nice Bloodstone, It's got some great red on one end.

I needed some Ocean Jasper for a gallery order. I cut the smallest of these stones today, it has a beautiful crystal structure with small green and orange orbs, very cool!

The next two pics are Montana Agate. These slabs are small
(about 1" by 1-1/2" for most of them), but they're choice!

This stone is called Red Freckled Dolomite. I don't know anything about it yet, but it looks like it might make some pretty nice cabs. This stone is about 3" long by about 2' thick.

Rounding out the group are three round Petoskey Stones, about baseball size. If you look closely you can see the coral structure on the surface. I hope this cuts well, it's kinda the "box of chocolate" thing with this material but . . . Question: What would life be without a certain amount of risk? Answer: Wonderful.

Dragonflies! Well, Mostly Dragonflies.

One of my gallery owners suggested I make dragonfly jewelry. So almost as if I have now will of my own I accommodated her. Well, actually I thought it was a pretty good idea. I made this pair of Montana agate and citrine earrings too. I'm currently working on three new dragonfly sculptures that I hope to finish this week. Below are the earrings and four dragonfly pendants with malachite, charoite, picture jasper, and turquoise gemstones.

The Peacock is Strutting His Stuff

I finished the peacock pendant I was working on as well as a few other pieces of jewelry. It features a Labradorite gemstone. Labradorite shimmers with blue iridescence similar to a peacock's plumage; also features three Peridot, and three blue Topaz accent stones. The silver metalwork also includes a 14K gold crown and a few gold pieces mixed into the silver granulation. In the background of this picture is the metalwork when it was nearly finished before setting the stones. I love the way these pieces come to life when the stones are set and the metal is polished.
